The Courage to Feel: Why Numbing Ourselves Costs Us Growth

                                                                                                     by Bia Limoli

There are days when it feels easier not to think too much. We push away emotions, distract ourselves, and convince our minds to stay busy so we don’t have to sit with what is heavy or challenging. In the moment, this choice can feel like relief—a temporary lightness, a way to avoid the sting of sadness, regret, or fear.

But every time we numb ourselves, we also silence an opportunity. Each avoided thought or feeling is one less chance to deepen our understanding of life, of our relationships, and even of our own hearts and true needs.

Growth Through Contrast

The truth is: growth rarely comes from comfort. We learn most when we lean into the contrast of life:

  • Joy feels brighter because we have known sadness.
  • Love feels richer because we have experienced loneliness.
  • Wisdom is born because we have stumbled, made mistakes, and kept going.

Our capacity to feel deeply—even the challenging emotions—is what shapes us into more compassionate, resilient, and authentic human beings.

The Cost of Numbing

Avoiding feelings might feel like self-protection, but it often keeps us standing still. Life continues to move, yet we stay paused, missing the chance to evolve, to grow into ourselves, and to embrace a more fulfilling, happier life. Numbing may remove the sharp edges of suffering, but it also flattens the depth of joy.

Life Always Offers Growth

Life will always give us opportunities to grow. Some come through moments of beauty, others through challenges that test our strength. It takes courage to silence our fears and step into the unknown; yet when we do, we open space for new possibilities to unfold.

Choosing Presence Over Escape

Choosing to think—and therefore to feel—requires courage. It means accepting that life will sometimes hurt. But it also means permitting ourselves to live fully. When we stay present with our emotions, even the uncomfortable ones, we open the door to greater clarity, healing, and meaning.

A Gentle Reminder

Next time you feel the urge to turn away from your emotions, pause and breathe. Ask yourself: What is this feeling here to teach me?

It may not be easy, but each moment of honesty with ourselves adds a layer to our growth. Feeling deeply is not a weakness—it is a sign that we are alive, learning, and becoming.

✨ “We can choose not to think to avoid feeling, but each day lived like that is one less chance to live true to our feelings, to learn, to evolve, and to gently fill the empty spaces inside us.”

And always remember—this is not about right or wrong. It is simply a reflection, a gentle question about who we want to be and how fully we wish to live.
